SSI and SSDI are two of the most common federal programs with the Social Security Administration. These two programs were designed to help provide financial assistance to senior citizens and individuals who are living with disabilities. While each program does the same thing, there are specific differences that set them apart. It’s important to know the difference in SSI and SSDi before applying for the benefits.
SSI
SSI, also known as Supplemental Security Income, helps provide minimum basic financial assistance to individuals with disabilities (regardless of their age) and older people who have a very limited income and/or resources.
SSDI
SSDI, also known as Social Security Disability Insurance, provides support to people who are disabled and have a qualifying work history through their own employment or a family member.
SSI & SSDI Differences
One major difference between SSI and SSDI is that SSI benefits are based on a person’s age/disability, limited income and resources. SSDI benefits are based on a person’s disability and work credits.
Another difference is that in most states, those who receive SSI benefits automatically qualify for Medicaid. However, an individual with SSDI will automatically qualify for Medicare after they have received disability payments for 24 months.
Can I Have Both?
If you’re wondering whether or not you can have SSI and SSDI benefits, the answer is yes. If you have a work history and also have limited income/resources, then you can qualify for both benefits.
How to Apply
SSI applications can be found online if you are an adult with a disability. However, they are not available online for people applying for a child under the age of 18 who is disabled, or for a non-disabled person aged 65 or older. In order to apply for SSI in these cases you will have to visit your local Social Security Office or by calling Social Security.
SSDI benefits can be applied for online at any age. In addition, applications can be submitted by calling Social Security or visiting your local office.
