If you need to apply for Social Security, you may be feeling overwhelmed and unsure where or how to start the process. That is completely normal, and thankfully enough people have been through the process that there is help. Here are some steps to help you get started.

You may be able to apply for social security online even if you aren’t sure of your eligibility. You can visit this link to start the online application process. Once the online process is complete, a Social Security representative may contact you to collect additional information if needed.
If you have someone else submit the application on your behalf, you will be contacted by a representative via phone to verify your intent to file, confirm the information provided is accurate and up to date, obtain any additional information that is needed and offer you an opportunity to provide your verbal consent to sign the application. It is important you make yourself available when this call comes so that the application can be processed in due time.
Please note that there is currently no online application for those who are age 65 or older, you will need to apply via phone or at your local office.
Apply By Phone
To apply over the phone you will need to make an appointment to file your application by calling 1-800-772-1213. There are options for those who are deaf or hard of hearing and you can utilize those options by calling the Social Security Administration at TTY 1-800-325-0778.
